Year 2

This is a picture of Year 2 children enjoying a picnic in the sun at the end of a busy week of activities. We had been studying Australia , making different things, doing art work and music. On Friday we all took part in the Australian sports and had great fun although it was very hot. Then we enjoyed this sumptuous picnic of food provided by the parents. A happy time was had by all.

Tom the Pom came to show Year 2 how to play the didgeridoo.  He explained that a didgeridoo is made by termites hollowing out the branch of a Eucalyptus tree.  When you play a didgeridoo you have to blow a big fat raspberry down it.  The important thing to remember is not to try too hard.  We had loads of fun and some of us even managed to get a sound from our didges!

We learned about the Aboriginal people of Australia and looked at their art work.  We tried to recreate this using matchsticks and paint.

Aboriginal people used boomerangs as weapons so that if they missed their prey their weapon would come back!  We made some decorative boomerangs which most definitely do not come back!

Year 3 - Italy

Venice

About Venice

Venice is a city in Italy , north of Rome at the top of the boot. Venice is made up of around 80 canals linking houses and people together.  The way that people and other items get around the city is by boats called gondolas.

 About the Festival

It has a festival every year with a theme about a topic that the city chooses.  This year the festival is dedicated to China . All of the people in the festival wear masks so that people around them do not know who they are.

Year 3 looked at festival masks and then made some of their own.

How to make an erupting Mount Vesuvius

 by Sam P Year 3

First we got a bottle and some newspaper.

Then we scrunched the newspaper up into balls and sellotaped them to the bottle.

After that we tore some of the newspaper and stuck it on the scrunched up balls.

We painted glue all over the volcano and let it dry.

Then we painted it grey and black.

Two days later we got a funnel and mixed some vinegar and six spoonfuls of bicarbonates of soda with some red food colouring.

Then we watched it explode!

Year 4

International Week

For International week, Year 4 studied China .  We learnt about Chinese symbols and Chinese culture.

Chinese Hats

On Friday we made some Chinese hats.  First of all we got a circle of card with a dot in the middle with a line running down from it.  We had to cut up that line and bring one side over to make a point and put a pencil mark so we knew where to staple it.  Then we had a band of card fitted on our heads.  We looked at some Chinese symbols to draw on to the hat.  The symbols we chose meant Riches, Happiness and Long Life.  After that we stuck our hats to the bands on our heads.
